Tomorrow is National Sticky Bun Day and one of the exceptionally delicious days of the year. The first memory I have of my mother’s hot, sticky buns was when I was just a little girl. Hot bread from the oven was a regular treat in our house from raisin buns to braided bread. My favourite, the one I longed for the most, was her sticky buns. I remember standing at the counter on my tiptoes, fingers grasping the countertop waiting for permission to pull one from the tray. Just at the critical moment, my brothers would arrive and we’d […]
Day Two in Niagara
Day two of our Niagara adventure. Jon says when he comes down the stairs he swears he smells cinnamon buns baking in the oven. I smell nothing – can he be more subtle? He makes a coffee and gives Jake his treats. Jake is a wonderful, larger than life cat. He lumbers around the house slowly, the size of a raccoon, Jake’s not a fan of quick movement or any other form of exercise. In the morning, Jon takes his treats from the bag in the pantry and walks with them (and Jake) to the other end of […]
Off To A Rough Start
I just posted a blog a few short hours ago about my new Niagara adventure. I’m housesitting for a friend who is right now (as I look out at 5-inches of newly fallen snow) in the sunny south of Florida. I just arrived yesterday, got the lay of the land and woke up this morning to an empty house. Yesterday was so warm I wasn’t wearing my coat, overnight it snowed – a lot. So my new duties as protector of their home begins. I saw my husband off to work, sipped on a cup of tea and designed […]
I’ve Moved Back Home
So I have this friend back in Niagara who goes to Florida in the winter months. And I have this husband who drives from Toronto to Niagara every day for work. I worry about his drive in bad weather. So, you guessed it. We married the two and I’m now house sitting in Niagara for the winter. My friends house is beautiful. The quintessential English estate parked neatly into an older neighbourhood with mature trees, older character homes and all of the personalities of an extended family. My husbands commute is now 10 minutes instead of an hour and […]
Kentucky Bourbon
Feel the love What’s not to love; thick caramel, luscious vanilla, ripe pear, eggy French toast and sassy brioche carried across a muscular body boosted with intense alcohol. Caught your attention? You’re not alone! I’ve just fallen in love with Kentucky bourbon. A member of the whisky family, bourbon is the sweetest of all whiskies with the yummiest of flavours that have seduced many women into falling in love with this male dominated drink. In fact, Kentucky’s first female master distiller, Marianne Barns will soon open a brand new artisan distillery (unnamed at time of printing) and is head […]
Edible Christmas Gifts
It’s that time of year when sharing and giving trumps parties and presents. It’s when I begin to make lists of those who have been kind to me and decide what I’m going to bake for them. Yes, bake. For unconditional kindness is priceless and so is the thought of issuing your own kind of unconditional kindness on others. So let’s get to it! Bake a dozen cookies, soak a pound of fruitcake, melt a batch of chocolate bark or boil a pot of fudge. It doesn’t have to be complicated; it just has to be from your kitchen […]
