It’s the very first day in the New Year and the first thing I need to do is to devour my little French lemon tart. This year I’m going to reduce my sugar intake by more than half (not that it’s something I can measure). But this little beauty is staring me right in the mouth, moistening up my salivary glands and making my culinary psyche eager. Last year my sugar intake got out of control. I love to bake and eat, I devoured too much candy at every and any opportunity, Saturday morning coffee with my husband turned […]
My Holiday Dinner
I’ve decided to throw caution to the wind this holiday season with a different looking holiday table. I’m making Porchetta. It’s a juicy pork roast, wrapped in pig skin and cooked at an ultra high heat. In the end, you have a crackling outside and a juicy, tender inside. Because the butcher will season it for you, it uber flavourful and addictively delicious. I think this qualifies as a grand holiday dinner. From my holiday kitchen to yours, may it be an overly abundant, excitingly delicious and thankfully local, memorable feast. Happy holidays everyone!! Here is how I make […]
When Stormy Is A Good Thing
I’m in the Florida Keys in the small fishing town of Marathon and I’m waiting for my ride. I’m staying at the Tranquility Bay Beach Resort with a small group of Canadian journalists and we’re all excited to be going to dinner at Castaways Waterfront Restaurant & Sushi Bar. We’d never been to Castaways, a short 2-minute drive down the Overseas Highway and we’re going in style; in a shiny, white, stretch limousine. We pile into the limo, drive down the highway and turn onto Ocean View Avenue. The fully lit up limousine surprisingly drives through a rough looking […]
A Novice Screw Up from a Veteran Travel Writer
It’s not my last assignment of the year but I was looking forward to the Florida Keys the most. I arrived at the airport at 4:45 am and the line up to check into Delta was gigantic. Hundreds of people lined up at least 500 feet long!! Electronic check-in kiosks were frozen and the Delta attendants were in chaos, totally unprepared for the regularly scheduled American Thanksgiving rush. I asked about the line and was told yes, I was in the right line. Against my better judgment I walked all the way to the end as instructed. After 20 […]
Toronto’s Christmas Market
Wow, what a freakin fantastic market!! Toronto’s Christmas Market opened last night in the Distillery District and I was there. Holy cow, was it fantastic! For the past 4 years my family and I have had a tradition of travelling to a different Christmas Market around the world. The Christmas Market in Paris blew us away. Beautifully decorated white wooden shacks lining both sides of the Champs Elysees flanked on one side by a giant Ferris Wheel and on the other by the Arc de Triomphe. The wooden shacks were filled with holiday foodstuffs and one-of-a-kind gifts. What’s not […]
When Only the Best Will Do
Don’t eat them in a tuxedo or in a car I’ve never met a butter tart I didn’t like, but when it comes to butter tarts, good is just not good enough. No, if I’m going to put inches on my hips it had better be amazingly great. Wikipedia claims butter tarts are “one of Canada’s quintessential desserts”, putting them into a category with Saskatoon berry pies, Nanaimo Bars, Sugar Pies and Blueberry Grunt. So how special are Ontario butter tarts? Just ask Donna Artuso of Canadian Sweets and Treats Bakery in Washington, DC. A native of Guelph, Ontario […]
